Abstract:

Based on observations from the Kelameili meteorological tower in the interior of the Gurbantunggut Desert and ERA5 reanalysis data, this study examined the variation characteristics and influencing factors of the winter atmospheric boundary layer over the desert from 1995 to 2024. The main results are as follows: (1) The ERA5 reanalysis data reproduce the boundary layer height(BLH) and land surface processes over the desert with good accuracy. (2) The winter BLH shows an overall spatial pattern of higher in the east and lower in the west. The BLH reached a spatial maximum of 494 m in daytime whereas its development was slow at night, with a maximum of 158.9 m. (3)The BLH, surface heat flux, 2-m air temperature, surface temperature, and 7-cm soil temperature all display pronounced diurnal variations. In winter, the surface-to-atmosphere heat transfer is dominated by sensible heat flux, with latent heat flux contributing only a small fraction. (4) In the ERA5 reanalysis, the BLH is positively correlated with several surface parameters (surface net solar radiation, sensible heat flux, latent heat flux, surface temperature, and 2-m air temperature; r≈0.81-0.89),and is positively but weakly correlated with 7-cm soil temperature (r≈0.43). On the interannual scale, the winter BLH is negatively correlated with snow depth. (5) The maximum and minimum average winter BLH were 106 m (in 2001) and 47.4 m (in 2007), respectively.
